Hobie Cat-Scan..
We had our first little boy accident this week. My poor baby has his first real ER visit AND first ambulance ride.
Mommy neglectfully put him in his bumbo to feed him dinner and despite it saying in bold right on the Bumbo...WARNING: Do Not Place On Elevated Surfaces. I set him on the kitchen table and turned my back to him (don't rub my stupidity in...I already feel bad enough). In a matter of seconds, he saw the remote control and tried to reach for it and fell right out. He fell about 3 feet off the table straight on to our kitchen floor. I immediately checked for broken or bleeding anything and there was none, but he was inconsolable. His pupils were the size of saucers and he was definitely not himself. I called the nurse helpline and they told me to take him to the hospital.
We waited a loooong time in the ER. He was an angel. Laughing and happy. I figured they would check him and send us home with instructions to watch him. I started to notice his cheek was turning a purplish hue and determined he much have landed there. I also noticed despite his sweet demeanor, that when I tried to lay him on his back (to change a diaper or put on pj's), that he freaked out. His body stiffened up and he got hysterical.
The ER doctor checked him out and there were really no other physical problems besides the bruise. It did concern her that he wouldn't go on his back though. She recommended a cat scan. I agreed with her and poor baby had to be strapped in during it while I held his face still.
She felt like there was a little spot on the cat scan that caused her concern . She had a neurosurgeon look at it (this is when I started to freak out during this whole ordeal) and he determined that his brain had a tiny bleed in it. The neurosurgeon recommended a pediatrician look at Hobie because although the bleed was very small, the fact that he would not allow us to let him be on his back concerned them. They decided to send me to another hospital with pediatric services. This involved an ambulance transport. I was told by the ER doctor that they would probably admit him for either a few hours to overnight (it was already almost 10pm). I called Vanz (who was at home with Sailor...I told him he probably didn't need to come when I saw how happy Hobie was earlier that evening) and asked him to grab a few items for Hobie and myself and meet me at the hospital (#2).
Hobie was given an IV and strapped full of wires. They strapped his carseat to the gurney and he was a sight to behold. He was a happy as could be. He had wires and all sorts of contraptions to play with. The hospital sent a nurse with us..just in case and off we went from Irvine to Anaheim.
Vanz and our friend the ward Joe Parks met us at the hospital. They both laughed as soon as they saw Hobie in his gurney mobile. I wish I had a photo of that silly boy. He was still happy as could be, despite it being 3 and half hours past his bedtime. The doctor knew we were coming and met with us quickly. She (and all the nurses, doctors and paramedics we dealt with were all wonderful by the way) checked him out, asked us some questions (and one of them was not.."how could you allow your baby to fall off a table?") and then we went to lay him down and he didn't fuss a bit. Completely back to his normal sweet self. She said she was almost disappointed because he was so cute that they would have loved him upstairs, they had a bed waiting for him and everything! We were given the ok to go home (past midnight by now) and told that if there was anything at all suspicious to bring him back and they would admit him for observation. While we were waiting for our discharge, Vanz and his Dad who drove down and met us at the hospital, gave Hobie a blessing.
We headed home to relieve Vanz's Mom who had also driven down to be with Sailor (who was oblivious to all that was happening as she was asleep).
He had a rough time falling asleep after all the excitement of the evening and we finally got him down around 2am. I was given instructions to wake him every two hours which I did.
The next day he was happy and although he was very sleepy, you would never suspect that anything happened. The following day I took him back to the Doctor for a follow up and again he was doing amazing. I expressed some concern about the bleeding, but she reassured me that it should heal up on it's own and the signs that is was not, such as a swollen head, vomiting, fluid in ears, etc.. were non existent. I am so grateful for his healthy little body and I know that Heavenly Father protected him and heard the many prayers on his behalf.
In other news..Does anyone need a Bumbo?
And NO, CPS has not shown up at my house.
Side Note: Sailor was at ballet when this occurred. I had Vanz who was racing home, call the studio to tell them to have Sailor wait in the office. Instead, her sweet teacher asked to help be a demonstrator for the class of 3-4 year olds after her class. Sailor thought that was the most amazing thing. She asked me today if I could forget to pick her up next week as well.

Our little trooper the next morning. He was chatting with me. He is very animated when we talk. Don't judge his crazy hair. He had lots of people touching his head.

How grateful we are that he has a hard head. He gave us quite a scare.
Wow Holly! I can't believe all that you guys went through. I appreciated your descriptive explanation of everything.....I am happy to hear he is doing good. (and for a minute I had to figure out what CPS meant- thought you meant CA Pools- but I got it. ;)
